CHILE DIPLOMACY: Shoring up ties with the neighbours

In late February President Michelle Bachelet hosted her Brazilian peer, Dilma Rousseff, in Santiago – Rousseff’s first official visit to Chile since Bachelet took office for a second term in March 2014. The meeting – which saw the two pledge to boost trade as part of efforts to address the economic difficulties plaguing both countries - followed an earlier meeting in January between Bachelet and Argentina’s new vice president, Gabriela Michetti. Both encounters follow other signs of Bachelet’s efforts to boost ties with regional neighbours.
