COLOMBIA POLITICS & ECONOMICS: ‘El Niño’ has serious consequences

The severe drought afflicting central and northern Colombia since mid-2015 as a result of the ‘El Niño’ climatic phenomenon is starting to have some very serious consequences. Low water levels have significantly hampered Colombia’s power generation - mostly hydroelectric – and have been linked to the deaths of indigenous children in the northern La Guajira department. The situation has exposed some serious deficiencies and earned the government led by President Juan Manuel Santos pointed criticism.
