VENEZUELA: Amnesty law threatens institutional standoff

The opposition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) has finally approved its promised amnesty law. President Nicolás Maduro immediately vowed to veto it, setting the scene for another showdown. Meanwhile, two police officers were killed and four wounded in San Cristóbal, capital of the western state of Táchira, on 29 March, amid student-led protests against a rise in public transport fares.
