MEXICO: Southbound gun trade

One of the latest twists and turns in the various escapes and re-captures of Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán was confirmation by the US Department of Justice in March that one of the guns recovered from his hideout following his latest capture in January had been imported illegally from the US as part of the rogue “Fast and Furious” operation. This in turn serves to highlight the large-scale sale of US weapons and their transfer south of the border, considered by many a mirror image of the drugs that move northwards across the same border.
