Start of gubernatorial electoral period spells trouble for Peña Nieto

The official campaign period ahead of the 5 June gubernatorial and legislative elections in 12 Mexican states (plus state legislative and municipal elections in another) began on 3-4 April. The early signs of the campaign suggest that in this politically sensitive period the main opposition parties are seeking to present a united front and politically damage the nationally ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) ahead of the 2018 general elections. This could make it difficult for the federal government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto to advance its agenda in the national legislature, which could severely delay the approval of some of the key initiatives that Peña Nieto would like to implement in the second half of his single six-year term.
