Kuczynski survives to fight duel with Fujimori

The battle for second in Peru’s presidential elections on 10 April was as closely contested as opinion polls suggested it would be. Keiko Fujimori, of the right-wing populist Fuerza Popular (FP), secured first place by a comfortable margin. She will face Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, of the conservative Peruanos por el Kambio (PPK), in a run-off on 5 June after he edged out Verónika Mendoza, of the left-wing Frente Amplio (FA), by a narrow margin. The tally of the concurrent congressional elections is incomplete but the signs are that the FP will have a simple majority, which will provide either a boon for Fujimori or a bind for Kuczynski.
