GUATEMALA: New constitutional court

Following the controversy over the election of Guatemala’s 13-member supreme justice court (CSJ) in late 2014 [RC-14-11], the appointments for the five-member constitutional court (CC), which were finalised last month, attracted scrutiny. The new CC will also subject to final review, ground-breaking cases exposed by the United Nations (UN)-backed International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig), along with the Attorney General’s office, such as the La Línea corruption case which forced the resignations last year of former President Otto Pérez Molina (2012-2015) and his vice president Roxana Baldetti.
