Paraguay and Brazil reinforce security cooperation and diplomatic ties

On 5 April, Brazil’s foreign and defence ministers, Mauro Vieira and Aldo Rebelo, respectively, met their Paraguayan counterparts, Eladio Loizaga and Diógenes Martínez, during an official visit to Paraguay. The visit, the first of its kind since the signing of a bilateral security cooperation agreement in 2007, included a meeting with President Horacio Cartes and resulted in the signing of new agreement outlining the cooperation between the neighbouring countries to combat transnational crime in the shared border region. The ministers also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under which the two countries are to work together to preserve the memory of the War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870), which pitted Paraguay against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, and which includes a pledge by Brazil to declassify all secret files relating to the conflict – a long-standing Paraguayan demand.
