COLOMBIA: La Macarena oil concession incites controversy

The recent decision by Colombia’s national environmental licensing agency (Anla) to award an oil exploitation licence in the La Macarena municipality of the southern Meta department, known for its outstanding natural beauty, has sparked controversy. Anla maintains that the concession awarded to US firm Hupecol Operating Co is close to but not inside the Tinigua natural park. However, those who oppose the concession warn that it lies dangerously close to the Losada River, which forms part of the Caño Cristales or ‘five colour river’ ecosystem, considered one of the most unique in the country. The level of public concern that oil extraction activity could destroy this ecosystem has led the government to revise its position.
