VENEZUELA: Darkness descends

Greater Caracas, along with the small neighbouring coastal state of Vargas and the offshore islands that make up Nueva Esparta, were spared the electricity rationing that officially took effect on 25 April for 40 days, as Venezuelans pray for rain to replenish reservoir levels at the country’s main Guri hydroelectric dam.
