REGION: UN looking disconnected on drug policy

The United Nations General Assembly Special Session on drugs (known as UNGASS 2016) was held on 19-21 April, two years earlier than planned, at the special request of Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico. International opinion remains divided between those who favour a continuing hard-line, “war on drugs” style approach, and those who believe drug use and trafficking can never be completely eradicated and therefore are seeking a more flexible approach focused on “harm reduction”. While most Latin American countries now favour that second, more nuanced approach, there was little progress at UNGASS: at best most countries have agreed to go their own way.
