A recent series of attacks on churches and a university has triggered fresh concerns vis-à-vis the long-running Mapuche conflict stemming from land-related demands in the southern Araucanía, Los Ríos, and Bío Bío Regions. Previous attacks have mainly targeted agricultural machinery and trucks. A new group calling itself “Weichan Auka Mapu” is claiming responsibility for the latest attacks, distinguishing itself from the radical Coordinadora Arauco Malleco (CAM) which has traditionally assumed authority for such incidents. This has led religious figures to call on the government led by President Michelle Bachelet to address the violence which has also been attributed in part to the arrests at the end of March of 11 people, including 10 Mapuche.
