ARGENTINA: Villa 31, 31 bis raided as gov’t looks to ‘sweep’ slums
On 7 April Argentina’s federal police (PFA), led by federal prosecutor Jorge di Lello and police chief Néstor Roncaglia raided parts of ‘Villa 31’ and ‘31 bis’, the slums that lie just beyond the upscale Retiro neighbourhood in the city of Buenos Aires, as part of a major anti-drug offensive. The operation was approved by Federal Judge Ariel Lijo and executed by the PFA’s neighbourhood crime prevention unit and its dangerous drugs (DP) unit. All told, some 500 police officers descended on the slums, resulting in the capture of various suspected drug dealers and the seizing of cocaine, large quantities of cannabis, firearms, a grenade, and Molotov cocktails, in one of the first major anti-narcotics operations launched under the government led by President Mauricio Macri since he came to power in December 2015.
