COLOMBIA: ELN peace talks on but no launch date

“A real opportunity to put an end to a conflict that has had enormous costs for the country over the last 50 years…The signing of the peace accords will open the door to a modern Colombia.” This was the upbeat assessment of Frank Pearl, the man who has led the government’s exploratory talks with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) after representatives of the administration of President Juan Manuel Santos and Colombia’s second guerrilla group met in Venezuela on 30 March to announce the launch of formal peace talks. But despite an agreed structure and venues for the talks, no date has been given for when they will actually commence.
