GIEI leaves Mexico but fires parting shots over Iguala

The inter-disciplinary group of independent experts (GIEI) sent by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to help with the investigation into the case of the abduction and presumed murder of 43 trainee teachers from the town of Iguala, Guerrero state, in September 2014, formally concluded its mission on 30 April. Although the case has not been fully solved, and the relatives of the Iguala disappeared called for an extension of GIEI’s mandate, the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto rejected this, insisting that it would take on board the group’s recommendations as it continued to investigate the case. The problem for the government is that in its final report, the GIEI has once again been highly critical of the way in which the Mexican authorities have conducted the investigation, placing them under renewed international scrutiny.
