New torture legislation as military in spotlight

Mexico’s federal senate approved a general law against torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment on 29 April, as President Enrique Peña Nieto struggles to salvage the military’s reputation after a series of human rights abuse scandals, including recent torture cases. The new legislation comes in the wake of independent reports condemning Mexico’s human rights situation.
