Veracruz campaign captures attention ahead of gubernatorial elections

As the campaigning ahead of the 5 June gubernatorial elections in 12 of Mexico’s states intensifies, one race in particular is grabbing national attention that of the eastern coastal state of Veracruz. Not only is the Veracruz the most populous of all the states going to the polls next month but voting intention polls show that the race for the governorship there is perhaps the closest and most hard fought of all, as it pits two first cousins against each other, one representing the nationally (and Veracruz) ruling Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) and the other the disparate opposition coalition formed by the right-wing Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and the left-wing Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD). It is believed that the outcome of the Veracruz gubernatorial race could determine the overall success of the ‘Stop the PRI’ opposition coalition and set the tone for the 2018 general elections.
