EL SALVADOR: Special force deployed to combat maras

The government led by President Salvador Sánchez Cerén is trying to turn the screw on El Salvador’s mara gangs by unleashing a 1,000-strong special reaction force (Feres, in the Spanish acronym). The deployment of the Feres is the standout security initiative rolled out so far by the government from the ‘extraordinary measures’ announced in mid-March, which Sánchez Cerén is boldly predicting will succeed in “crushing” the mara gangs within 12 months.
