GUATEMALA: Another two years for Cicig

President Jimmy Morales made good a key 2015 electoral pledge last month and requested a two-year extension for the United Nations (UN)-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) until September 2019. Given the pivotal role played by Cicig, along with the attorney general’s office (AG), in uncovering public corruption last year (ultimately forcing the resignations of president Otto Pérez Molina [2012-2015] and his vice-president, Roxana Baldetti over the so-called La Línea case), Morales had little choice but to follow through.
