URUGUAY DIPLOMACY: Splits in ruling FA over Rousseff’s fate

The government led by Uruguay’s President Tabaré Vázquez and the ruling left-wing Frente Amplio (FA) coalition are at odds over the 12 May decision by Brazil’s federal senate to suspend President Dilma Rousseff and subject her to an impeachment trial. The contrasting pragmatic and ideological responses showcased the divisions. While the FA issued a statement the following day arguing that Brazil’s new government led by interim president, Michel Temer, “will deepen political and economic stability at a regional level, with repercussions for the region and our country”; the Vázquez administration, controlled by the more moderate wing of the FA, expressed reservations about the possible adverse impact on trade negotiations between the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and the European Union (EU).
