URUGUAY: Taking drastic measures to tackle criminality

Uruguay’s political class has agreed to introduce new drastic measures to try to tackle the country’s rising insecurity. Following a series of meetings between President Tabaré Vázquez and representatives from the political opposition, the two sides reached an agreement to introduce significant changes to the national justice system as well as to the way in which the security forces combat drug trafficking. The big question is whether these measures will be enough to turn the tide and really improve public security.
