ARGENTINA: New crime figures provide baseline

After eight years without any official statistics on the matter, Argentina’s new government released the new national crime statistics on 25 April. The previous government led by former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) stopped releasing crime figures in 2008 arguing that these were inadequate and promising to come up with an improved methodology that would help it to more accurate measure crime levels, which the general consensus was that they have been on the rise for years. The new crime figures will provide a baseline for measuring the success or failure of the administration led by President Mauricio Macri to deliver on its promise to tackle the issue of rising criminality.
