Panama’s security minister, Rodolfo Aguilera, and his deputy, Rogelio Donadío, resigned this month. Their departures did not entirely come as a surprise given bickering between the two which had been ongoing for months over various issues. This led critics to warn that the power struggle was eroding the credibility of the security ministry (Minseg). President Juan Carlos Varela has since named Alexis Bethancourt Yau, the head of Panama’s financial analysis unit (UAF), to replace Donadío on a permanent basis and Aguilera on an interim one, until further notice.
