Recall referendum appears more distant

Since winning a majority in the December 2015 mid-term legislative elections, Venezuela’s opposition has been pinning its hopes on securing enough support to force a recall referendum and remove President Nicolás Maduro from office. However, that prospect looks increasingly distant, with official efforts increasingly designed to delay, or derail altogether, a referendum.
