BOLIVIA: New ombudsman faces challenges

This month David Tezanos Pinto took over for a six-year term as Bolivia’s new human-rights ombudsman, replacing Rolando Villena who had clashed with the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government at times –particularly over issues like its extractivist policy. Tezanos’ appointment by the MAS-controlled 166-member bicameral legislature has been controversial given his alleged links to the ruling party and fears that this could undermine the independence of the institution.
