ECUADOR: Tourism a priority as Ecuador rebuilds

In a press release published by Ecuador’s tourism ministry on 22 May, the government led by President Rafael Correa made it clear that it will place a strong emphasis on the country’s tourism industry during reconstruction efforts following the 16 April earthquake. The government’s tourism reconstruction plan has been made possible by a new law approved on 12 May which will provide the government with new revenues through an increase to value added tax (VAT) and new ‘solidarity taxes’ required of both public- and private-sector workers.
