The government led by President Juan Manuel Santos is trying to defuse protests by indigenous groups and farmers which are affecting more than half of Colombia’s 32 departments, with some outbreaks of violence and major transport arteries blocked. The police said it had audio evidence that the country’s second largest guerrilla group, Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), was planning to infiltrate the protests.
