Governors rally behind opium poppy legalisation
There is a growing clamour among Mexican governors for the federal government to analyse the legalisation of opium poppy cultivation for medicinal purposes. Leading the charge is Héctor Astudillo, the governor of Guerrero, the state where some 60% of Mexico’s poppy production is concentrated, resulting in a violent struggle for control of the drug trade between rival local criminal groups. Astudillo was hoping for a receptive response from the federal government after its recent shift in drug strategy with a decisive move to legalise marijuana for medicinal use and, after nine state governors came out and backed his proposal, he got it. Two key federal government officials have promised an in-depth debate of the issue and profound analysis of poppy legalisation’s medicinal potential.
