*** GUYANA GOVERNMENT RECEIVES PRISON RIOT REPORT. On 1 June, Guyana’s President David Granger received the report of the commission of inquiry into the 3 March prison riot in which 17 people were killed. On receipt of the report, Granger said: “We have a good idea of what needs to be done…Starting this year, prison officers will be trained in the police academy, so we expect that that will raise their level of competence.” He said that the number of prison officers will be increased, and that among all prison staff there will be “a team of officers who will be able to respond to incidents like the one that occurred on 3 March so we shouldn’t need to call out the defence force and the police force to support the prison service. They will have their own capability.”
