URUGUAY POLITICS & ECONOMY: Debate rages over raising taxes

Uruguay is in the grip of a heated debate over a tax increase proposed by the government led by President Tabaré Vázquez. On one extreme is the right-leaning political opposition which contends that Vázquez point blank lied to the Uruguayan population during the last election campaign in 2014 when he said “there will be no increase in the tax burden” and that the wealthy are being unduly punished. On the other extreme is the umbrella trade union Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores–Convención Nacional de Trabajadores (Pit-Cnt) which has threatened a 24-hour strike on 29 June unless the government alters its tax proposal by exempting all but the wealthiest citizens from the tax increase – and that they should pay significantly more.
