President Salvador Sánchez Cerén delivered an upbeat assessment of the security situation in El Salvador during his state-of-the-nation address on 1 June to mark the completion of his second year in office. He said the fall in homicides in the previous two months was testament to the success of the ‘extraordinary measures’ decreed by his government to combat the country’s mara street gangs.
