BOLIVIA: Long-awaited judicial summit takes place
The Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government led by President Evo Morales made good a promise this month and held a judicial summit to address key problems facing the judiciary. While the issue of justice remains a major weak spot of the MAS government, the summit attracted criticism from the political opposition for various reasons – lawyers’ associations like the Colegio Nacional de Abogados (Conalab), and the Catholic Church. One source of suspicion was the possibility that behind the proposed changes is the intent to amend the 2009 constitution to allow President Morales to run for a third consecutive presidential term – despite the fact that the February 2016 popular referendum on the issue produced a defeat for Morales and the MAS [RA-16-02].
