After weeks of paralysis in the peace talks between the Colombian government led by President Juan Manuel Santos and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) leftist guerrillas following the failure to meet the March deadline set by President Santos for negotiations to be concluded [RA-16-05], the two sides have taken another decisive step towards a definitive peace deal. On 23 June, the government and the Farc formally signed off on an agreement setting the terms of a definitive bilateral ceasefire that is to take effect once a full peace deal is finalised. This has sparked optimism that a final deal can be reached as soon as next month.
