New justice system fully implemented but anti-corruption system snags

After eight years of arduous political wrangling, all 32 of Mexico’s states have now adopted the new justice system introduced under the 2008 constitutional judicial reform. This is a major achievement by the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto, which managed to conclude the process by the legally set deadline of 18 June, thus avoiding an institutional crisis. But if this was widely celebrated as a significant positive step, Peña Nieto’s decision to veto the recently approved secondary legislation linked to the national anti-corruption system (SNA) is seen as a significant setback to the general efforts to reinforce the rule of law and stop the spread of organised crime.
