López Obrador bids to capitalise on teacher unrest

“The current [national] project is unviable, it doesn’t work and it is on the point of failing completely”. This was one of the standout quotes from a speech given by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the leader of the radical left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party in Mexico City on 26 June. López Obrador was addressing a rally of protesters who marched in support of the country’s second largest teachers’ union, the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE).
