Relaunching relations with Canada

Mexico and Canada have taken decisive steps to strengthen their relations by signing 14 new bilateral cooperation agreements this month. The agreements, covering things such as economic, security and environmental cooperation were signed during the official two-day visit that Mexico’s President Enrique Peña Nieto made to Canada on 27 June ahead of the 29 June X Summit of the heads of state of the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) grouping, held in Ottawa. The shoring up of relations was achieved thanks to the gesture made by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of formally lifting the visa requirement for Mexican nationals seeking to enter Canada, which had been unilaterally introduced by the latter in 2009.
