VENEZUELA: Military assumes wider powers
The state of exception and economic emergency was extended for another 60 days in the 13 July edition of the official gazette. This is the third consecutive extension of the measure, which grants President Nicolás Maduro broad unilateral powers to legislate freely without consulting the opposition-controlled national assembly. Meanwhile, the defence minister and head of the Venezuelan armed forces, General Vladimir Padrino López, appeared on state television to deny that his promotion on 11 July to the joint helm, along with Maduro, of a new national command for supply (Comando Nacional de la Gran Misión Abastecimiento Soberano y Seguro) – and to which all ministers, ministries and institutions of state are subordinate – amounted to unprecedented militarisation.
