Protests greet Macri’s gas price increases

In some of the most significant protests yet against the Argentine government led by President Mauricio Macri, thousands of people took to the streets in middle-class suburbs across the city of Buenos Aires on 14 July to denounce sharp increases in natural gas tariffs. After years of fixed nominal gas utility rates, which fell sharply in real terms from year-to-year because of inflation, earlier this year the new government introduced big increases, with some tariffs going up by over 1,000%, a move which has sparked strong political opposition and even legal challenges.
