Maia election pleases Temer

Another obstacle to the right-leaning stance of Brazil’s interim government led by Michel Temer was removed from its path this week with the election of Rodrigo Maia, a federal deputy from the Democratas (DEM) party, as speaker of the lower house of the national congress. Among Maia’s main responsibilities will be ensuring the government receives the two-thirds supermajority it will need to pass constitutional amendements on spending caps and social security reform in the lower chamber. His mandate only lasts until February 2017.
