ECONOMIC OVERVIEW: URUGUAY

Celebrating change in Argentine policies: The president of Uruguay’s central bank (BCU), Mario Bergara, said on 6 July that his country was celebrating the decision by the Argentine government led by President Mauricio Macri to reverse a series of measures taken over the previous four years by his predecessor Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) that directly affected Uruguay. Speaking at a conference entitled ‘Current economic challenges’ at the Spanish chamber of commerce in Montevideo, Bergara singled out the Macri administration’s elimination of import restrictions and currency controls, and the repeal of a controversial decision adopted in 2013 banning the entry of any merchandise destined for Argentina previously passing through Uruguayan ports, which had damaged Uruguay’s maritime transport industry.
