URUGUAY: Concern over record marijuana seizures

The Uruguayan authorities have seized 2.75 tonnes (t) of marijuana in the first six months of 2016. This is more than the 2.52t seized between March 2015 (when President Tabaré Vázquez assumed office for second time) and December 2015, and new record-high figure. This is causing concern in Uruguay as it comes just before government-produced marijuana is due to start being sold legally in pharmacies and other shops across the country. The move is part of the government’s plans to control marijuana production and distribution in the country following its full legalisation in 2014.
