GUATEMALA: Military to continue civilian security tasks

President Jimmy Morales confirmed this month that the military would continue supporting the national police (PNC) in a domestic security role, extending a controversial stopgap measure seen elsewhere in the region. Morales pointed to progress over security as reason for his decision (see box), despite concerns regarding the links between the military and his small conservative Frente de Convergencia Nacional (FCN-Nación) party which took office on 14 January.
