Last month, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (Unodc) released its annual monitoring survey, which revealed a 1% fall in coca cultivation area in the country – to 20,200ha from 20,400ha. The report, which was issued on 5 July, was well received by President Evo Morales – whose Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government pursues a ‘Coca Sí, Cocaína No’ drugs policy distinguishing between the raw coca leaf and cocaine, the illegal narcotic – an ongoing bone of contention with the US whose Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was ejected in 2008 amid a diplomatic spat.
