Building new bridges with South America

On 25 July, Brazil’s foreign minister, José Serra, visited Mexico to discuss the extension of the complementary economic accord (ACE 53) with his Mexican peer, Claudia Ruiz Massieu. The ACE 53, which was signed in 2002 by Mexico’s former president Vicente Fox (2000-2006) and Brazil’s former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002), is a bilateral trade accord that establishes the terms under which preferential trade between the two countries is conducted. Both ministers said that due to the adverse current economic situation in Latin America, their respective governments were now not only committed to maintaining positive bilateral trade relations but were also keen on developing them further.
