The Mexican and US governments have created a new binational task force charged with combating the trafficking and consumption of heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic opioid analgesic that appears to have become the new in vogue synthetic drug in the US. The announcement of the new task force was made on 25 July during an official visit to Washington DC by the head of Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office (PGR), Arely Gómez. The two governments said that the aim of the task force was to deliver fast results in the fight against the spread of the use of these two drugs, which are primarily produced in Mexico but consumed in the US, over which both countries say they have a shared responsibility.
