NICARAGUA: Ortega ends speculation over his running mate

President Daniel Ortega’s ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) has named First Lady Rosario Murillo as Ortega’s vice presidential running mate, ahead of the 6 November general elections. The announcement regarding Murillo – who already plays an influential role in the current administration as the official government spokesperson – has been strongly criticised by Ortega’s detractors as yet another attempt to concentrate power in the hands of his family. It comes amid other moves by the FSLN-controlled electoral authorities (CSE) which have further fanned democracy concerns ahead of the vote.
