PANAMA: Varela unveils budget

Last month, President Juan Carlos Varela presented his proposed state budget for 2017 for US$21.670bn, up US$1.54bn on the previous year. With teachers staging their first protests since the Partido Panameñista (PPA)-led El Pueblo Primero (EPP) coalition government took office in July 2014, the cabinet proposal would seem to back up President Varela’s pledge that “areas such as education, health, social investments, urban mobility and justice would be prioritised”.
