After all the trials and tribulations associated with the current peace process with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) over the course of nearly four years of negotiations, two opinion surveys in a matter of days revealed, for the first time, that the public might reject an eventual accord in a referendum. The volatile nature of support for the peace process is a major concern for President Juan Manuel Santos. Paradoxically, in order to cement his legacy as the man who delivered peace with the Farc, Santos might need to retreat into the background.
