MEXICO: Zapata’s spirit stalks Zócalo

Around 100,000 small farmers marked the 137th anniversary of the birth of Emiliano Zapata, the main leader of the peasant revolution in 1910, on 8 August by marching through the streets of the capital. Bused in from seven different states, the campesinos carried placards accusing the government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto of reneging on a promise to deliver a land reform, for which Zapata fought over a century ago, and provide financial support for the struggling agriculture sector.
