Political and social tensions rise as public becomes disenchanted with Macri

It may only be eight months since President Mauricio Macri won election in Argentina but the general optimism that greeted his victory is all but gone. The ‘economic adjustment’ that the Macri administration has implemented to address the numerous macroeconomic imbalances it inherited from the previous Frente para la Victoria (FPV, kirchneristas) administration led by Cristina Fernández (2004-2015) is producing social discontent. Meanwhile, the various investigations into suspected official corruption during the Fernández administration being advanced in the courts continue to exacerbate the deep political divisions in the country.
